CELEBRATE

I am officially in the Marriott School of Management.
WOOHOO.

And it's a good thing... since I decided to try out a science course this semester and apparently i'm horrible at science.. so good thing I don't have to go that route! haha.

:) :) :)

Squeee!!!

You know those people who just can't wait to find out if they're having a boy or a girl, so they pay money to have an ultrasound to find out 4 weeks earlier than the doctor will tell them? Yeah... I think I understand those people now. :)

Charmain's 90th Birthday

Here are some pictures from the weekend. Fun times!

funny cartoon

There have been lots of blog posts recently...
But I came across this and thought it was worthy of sharing

Perspective

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of this, but this morning Doug walked into Andrew's room (where I was getting the boys dressed) wearing blue jeans and no shirt. I told Doug he looked like an Abercrombie & Fitch model. Jake exclaimed, "Daddy, you look like a Lamanite!"

...

I got a job.

Starting tomorrow I have to dress up for school.. ugh.

I'll be working as a secretary (office assistant) in the honor code office.
wabam :)

my roommates and i got a 5 foot fake Christmas tree.

Thanksgiving in KY

We had a great Thanksgiving with Matt, Courtney, Heather and Hyrum. It had rained for about 4 days but Thanksgiving was sunny and very warm and it continued that way until Sunday when it started to rain again. So nice to have a warm Thanksgiving. We had 15 people for dinner....and lots of leftovers to send home with Heather and Hyrum. The only 'glitch' to the dinner was that when I put the holiday slush in the freezer to freeze it was great, but when I shut the freezer lid I heard a strange sound and when I opened it back up the pan had tipped and spilled everything out. Not I have a gallon of red slush frozen in the bottom of my freezer and all over everything else in it. Someday I"ll have to clean that out.....Matt spent the 4 days before Thanksgiving putting up ceiling fans in the bedrooms. Instead of shopping, on Black Friday we all went shooting with the Tates Creek Ward Sportsman Club. There were about 15 of us and after they got the targets all set up and said GO, everyone just started shooting anything they had as fast as they could. Talk about your Red Neck Thanksgiving!

As Long as We're Talking About Shoes...

As soon as I figure out how to wear glittery heels, I will...

DINNER, DINNER & DINNER

Just returned from our 2.5 day cruise to the Bahamas. I realized that I wasn't completely right when I said you can have breakfast, dinner and supper or breakfast, lunch and dinner, but not breakfast, lunch and supper (Dinner being the big meal of the day). On the cruise we had breakfast, brunch, dinner, afternoon snacks, dinner, 4th meal and more dinner. Nothing but big meals the whole cruise! It was great to just sit in a chair in the sun and read a book for 2 days. We were on the Carnival Sensation. Dad said it was probably the oldest ship in their fleet. The whole thing was decorated in bright purple, bright blues, red and orange. Garrish is the word I'd used to describe it. It certainly assaulted the senses! Also, the food wasn't that good. I remember the meals we had when we all went on the cruise being really yummy and fun....maybe it was just the bulk or people around the table??!! I realized that you get a lot more attention in the dining room if you're at a big table with lots of people. Tom and I were at a table for 2...very quaint and quiet. Nobody paid us much attention. We didn't mind. Except that the waiter wasn't even paying us much attention and several tables that came in after we did were served and out of there way before us!
We flew into Orlando on Thurs. When we bought the tickets the plane was supposed to land around 1 pm. Then they changed the schedule to land at 2:00. The ship was leaving port at 4:00 and we had to rent a car and drive 45 miles to the port! We figured there was a 50/50 chance we'd be spending the weekend in Orland0, but we got off of the plane, got a rental car and were on our way in 20 min. and arrived at the port at 3:10. As we were walking through the parking lot we could see all of the Cruise employees leaving the terminal! It made us wonder if there would be anybody left inside to check us in. As it turns out we were the last people to arrive and second to last to get on the ship! The good news is that we didn't have to stand in any of those long lines of people to get checked in. There are advantages to being the last, I guess.
We found Nassau Bahamas to be a bit of a tourist trap. In order to get onto the island you have to go through their customs which then dumps you into a big convention-type hall with vendors all over that you have to wind your way through before you get outside. Then you're in a walkway that is full of people trying to sell you tours, scooter rentals, carriage rides, beach excursions, etc. After that you find yourself in an outdoor market full of more vendors. It takes a great deal of determination just to get out to the normal city area. We didn't find any of their souveniers to be very enticing. Mostly the trinkets you see in Mexico or flea markets that were made in China anyway. I talked Dad into going on a city tour. The people selling the tour had binders full of pictures of the things you'd see and places you'd go....to the big hotel, to the fort, to the beach etc. And all in the comfort of an air conditioned van. And over 2 hours of tour. Sounded like a good way to see the island and hear the history. The group we agreed to join had been waiting about 15 min. for the tour lady to get enough people to take the tour by the time we joined. She said she was just going to be another 3 min. to get one more couple and then we'd go. 15 minutes later she finally came back and said she had to go get the van which was parked a few blocks away and she'd be back in 5 min. or less. About 15 min. later she arrived with the van. She'd been trying to recruit other people the whole time!! So we piled into this old 15 passenger van and ended up in the very back seat, which didn't have any AC vents. And it was very hot! The tour lady kept saying she'd get the van cooler but she never did. She drove us up through the center of town (about 4 blocks) and pointed out the government buildings, the building where Anna Nichol Smith lived and a purple flower that is a native plant. Then over 2 blocks to an old fort and staircase called the Queen's Stairs. She said we'd be there for about 30 min. for people to look around. It took us about 10 min. to look at everything and then we waited around in the sun for our guide. About 50 min. later Tom said this was bogus and he wasn't interested in going on the rest of the tour and to go find the tour guide and tell her were walking back to the ship. When I finally found her I offered to pay her something for her bringing us up to the fort and she said we owed her a sum that was slightly more than half of the total tour. I asked her how she could expect us to pay her for more than half of the tour when we'd only gone one place and she said "We're over half way through the tour....we only have one more stop". I was incredulous. When I asked her about all of the places we were supposed to see and said that she never said we'd be stopping at them and you could just look out the window as she drove to the next stop to see them. As for going to the beach...she said that was optional and she hadn't planned on stopping there. What a scam! When Tom heard, he told her we were walking back and she could take our $10 or we'd just not pay her anything. She wasn't very happy but we gave her the money and it only took us 10 min. to walk back to the ship anyway! Fortunately she hadn't collected the money at the start or we would have been hosed. I'll bet she collects at the beginning in the future!
We spent most of Sat. out on a lounge chair reading a book and never got sunburned! I got a nice massage and facial which was fun. I found a lovely mustard yellow scarf on the ship that will look nice for family pictures and it was big enough to cut up into 4 scarves! So if anybody wants one...I have 3 extras. We got off of the ship on Sun. morning at 8:00, attended Sac. meeting at a ward in Orlando and checked into a hotel and spend the afternoon laying out in the sun and reading more books. It was a relaxing vacation.

Thanksgiving lunch

Hyrum and I have been arguing about what "dinner" means.  On Sunday coming home from church I said we're having stir-fry for dinner, and invited someone to come eat with us at 1.  He said, "So it's lunch, or dinner?"  To which I said, "Both."  He kept telling me dinner was at night.  (So what do we call it... Thanksgiving lunch??)

Anyway, that sets the scene for our conversation last night, when again, he told me I was using the word dinner wrong:

Me:  Oh yeah?  As soon as we get home, I'm going to look up "dinner" in the dictionary, and you'll see that I'm right, and you'll ask me for forgiveness.
Hyrum: I might see that you're right... and let's leave it at that.

Halloween, Veterans Day, and Christmas

On Halloween night we had no plans (no trick-or-treating in our apartment area), so we went running to enjoy the leaves.  As I was running I started thinking about all the times we ate pizza and donuts on Halloween.... so then I vocalized it.  And then Hyrum was sold.  Unfortunately, the address we went to for Little Caesars "hot and ready" was out of business.... so we had to settle for an legitimate pizza place next door.  Slightly more expensive, but delicious none-the-less.  (I hear we're not the only ones who re-lived this tradition??) (And ps, please ignore the pants... I definitely didn't pick them out! but they are warm.)

On to the next holiday celebration: Veterans Day.... which most people don't celebrate.  But for us it means "eat all you can for free" while restaurants have special deals for military members.  Hyrum went for a free lunch at Texas Roadhouse, free dinner at Applebees, and is planning to go to a free dinner Monday at Golden Corral.  Missed out on a free Bloomin' Onion (no time or space) and a free Krispy Kreme (always time and space for a donut, but the closest one is a few hours away.)  The nice thing about Applebees is that for both meals, we walked away only having to pay a $5 tip.  They brought me my food, which was delicious and I started devouring, then I noticed that the plate was a little dirty, like there were water spots on it.  It didn't seem like a big deal, but the waitress was walking by, so I pointed it out for future notice to be more careful.  She immediately grabbed my plate and told me she was disgusted and would bring me a new one right away.  Two more managers came out to apologize, saying they were appalled.  They brought me chips and salsa while I waited.  Then they took care of the bill.  And we brought home left-overs.  Thank-you veterans day and a slightly dirty plate.

Now onto Christmas-- is anyone else planning on wearing a gray sweater?  I didn't buy this one, but am looking for something like it.  Thoughts?

Hyrum bought a shirt he can wear, but I forgot to take a picture of it.  Some day.

New Kitchen

Since we have lovely granite counters I thought that it was time to take down the wallpaper (which I thought was competing with the look of the granite) and do something different. With Jenna's encouragement (I put that in so I can deflect some of the scowls from Dad to her!!) I took down the wallpaper and painted and put up white Beadboard. Initially I thought the wallpaper removal was going to be a piece of cake. The first piece I took down came in one big strip. About half way around the room it started coming off in smaller and smaller pieces. Still, I've had worse. Discovered someone's art work on the wall after the wallpaper was off. Then I painted the top 1/3 of the wall and dark grayish brown color. The next job was to put up the beadboard. I had figured this would take 3-4 hours. WRONG. The beadboard itself ended up taking us 15 hours and we still had to do the trim later!! Needless to say, if Dad wasn't thrilled about the new kitchen look before I started, he was even less thrilled about it after. Once it was all done I asked him how he liked the beadboard. He said he didn't. When I asked why he said he grew up in a house with paneling and he doesn't like it. I told him this was beadboard, not paneling. He said "You can dress a pig up in a silk dress but it's still a pig". So there you go...probably true!! To top it all off, while he was in NYC I bought some fabric and made curtains. I got fabric that had the right texture and colors to match everything. When Dad got home he almost fell over in shock. He said not only does he have to live with paneling, now there are curtains with French all over them! So , here are pictures of our French country kitchen!!

these are my favorites from the shoot.

Rise to the Challenge!

I think we need a little competition:

In the form of a turkey trot (5k on Thanksgiving morning).
These are held all over the place so everyone is invited to participate, but for those who will be in Kentucky we should do the following:

Thoroughbred classic at Keeneland. It's a 5k run/walk, for those feeling slightly less ambitious.
It's at 8:30 on Thursday morning, so we can get up, run, come home & EAT TONS, then nap the rest of the day.

Don't be a wimp.
:)

Hyrum's Birthday

I'll watch what I say about Hyrum being old now (since two other people in the family are the exact same age!) but we had a fun time celebrating the big 3-0.  [By the way, we just uploaded a bunch of pictures from Hyrum's phone--hence the posting delay.]
We had some friends over to play games and eat a delicious version of tres leches.

Then we had a ward potluck between conference sessions so I made Hyrum a cake to be proud of.

Then for dinner we ate Colombian food served in our NEW Colombian dishes-- it's Arepas with shredded meat and a sauce called Hogao (tomato, garlic, cumin, green onion, a few other things)

30 looks pretty good to me!

Air Show

In September there was an airshow in Cleveland.  Hyrum volunteered to work at the ROTC booth, so we got in for free.  Aside from the fact that it was HOT outside, we had fun watching the planes.  They had a bunch of airplanes and helicopters around to walk through.

SCARY PARENTS

Yes, it's Halloween. But, that's not necessarily the ONLY reason the parents are scary!!!
(Jenna,....do you recognize the roses??)

Halloween with Hyrum

We had two chances to celebrate Halloween this year (stake youth dance a few weeks ago, and our ward Halloween party), which is nice because last year (with Hyrum training the weekend of Halloween) we did absolutely nothing!  So Hyrum redeemed himself by coming up with two great costumes:

When left to his own devices for the youth dance, he came up with this!  Not bad.  Then I started wondering, "Wait-- we don't have a red cape at home, where'd this come from?"  Look familiar Jenna?  It used to be your dress.  Resourceful husband of mine.

The next costume was inspired one night last week when I accidentally took out my skinny jeans and dared Hyrum to try them on.  (Yeah... not a great feeling that my husband fits into my jeans better than me, but I guess I got over that a while ago.)  From there, the belt, shoes, eyeliner, and hair gel all just happened.  And all of a sudden Hyrum was "Emo" for the ward party.  Most people knew exactly what he was going for-- but one lady we're friends with walked up and said, "What are you?  A terrorist?"  And Hyrum replied, "That's racial profiling!"

Church With Toddlers...

...is rough. Let's see. For starters, Andrew decided to join in the opening hymn by yelling, long and loud, "AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!" He continued yelling through most of the meeting. He also likes to "conduct" when we sing by flapping his arm around. Then, during the last speaker, Jake asked (loudly, and of course during a quiet pause), "Are we done yet?!" Andrew then piped in yelling, "Bye bye! Bye bye!" and waving goodbye to the concluding speaker. Needless to say, Sacrament meeting is a more active hour than it was pre-children. However, both boys are now in nursery, so 2nd and 3rd hours are nice. :)

HOLA.

Happy Halloween (weekend)

I thought about going as a Lion, but then I remembered that Jake had a sweet lion costume and there's no way I could compete as that, so I abandoned that idea. Next year (mom), I expect one as well...

Matt let me take another picture with him though. Record.
